So, according to Barrie, Frank’s face was recognisable. This directly contradicts the family story that my grandfather had been badly burned, that he was only able to be identified forensically. Frank’s family weren’t able to see him, and that only added to the trauma. I am confronted yet again with the danger held in the stories we tell ourselves. I have believed in a falsity for almost 40 years, and only now am I uncovering the truth, which is in direct conflict with the beliefs of my family.

Two questions weigh heavily on me. Do I choose to share what I have learned with my family, and risk becoming the focus of their anger? Or do I hold on to it to preserve my relationships—and, ultimately, myself?

I started this research because I wanted to learn more about my grandfather, but I never expected to uncover truths that were awkward and weighty and painful.

As I leave the funeral home, Barrie says to me, ‘I think what you’re doing is great. You want to know more. There’s a hell of a lot of threads to put together, and that’s what you’re doing. You’re the spark that ignites [your family’s] memory.’
